Lana & Peter 1 & 2 August 2015

Justin and I were going to drop around to Helen's and dig up her heritage apple tree (variety unknown) and take it to Inglewood.  She thought it might damage her water pipes,  so wanted to get rid of it, and also thought we'd give it a good new home at Inglewood.  However we slept in, it was rainy, and Lana and Peter were going to be at the house by midday, so we gave it a miss.  Will get it next weekend, as it's still dormant.  I just know that it will take longer than expected to trim and dig it out. (I predict 2 hours!)

On the plus side we drove to Inglewood in the passat rather than the ute.  Much more comfortable. Dropped off some more surplus clothes at the Op Shop, and saw that a young blokes coming out of the Royal Hotel (but it's not open yet).  Went across to have a chat, and spoke with a young bloke.  His Dad Paul then came out and told us that it should be open next week.   He has a pub in Maryborough, and is installing a microbrewery there.  So that chef will come and cook at Inglewood for 8 weeks.  This chef had apparently said no to a job with Jamie Oliver.  We look forward to having a meal there.

Sadly, despite having Peter, Lana got lost again.  It seems that they went straight at Marong rather than turn left.  I received one text saying they were on the Serpentine Road, and then another asking if they were supposed to be on a gravel road.  Obviously they were not

They arrived eventually, and we had a hot late lunch (it was another cold day).  Pies and salad - with rocket from the garden.

Maile and David also dropped in a bit later to give us some not so happy news about town.

After showing Peter around, we walked up the street to buy some eggs from David (I missed out last time), and then onto the pub to make a booking for dinner. Lana and Peter were bemused by the fact that I didn't have to designate a time, nor my name  for the booking, just number of people.

After this we went up to Melville's Caves for a wander.  The day was overcast, and somewhat gloomy, however Lana and Peter were still impressed by the views.

On the drive back down the road from Melville's Caves we saw 7 kangaroos - some quite close to the car.  I was quite surprised by this, as we don't normally see so many in the afternoon.  However as I said it was quite gloomy, so perhaps the kangaroos thought it was close to dusk.

if you look closely, you can see the kangaroo just about in the middle of the photo

Dropped in at Kangerdaar Winery on the way back. And there were yet more kangaroos.  A couple bounded by us as we were getting out of the car.  We thought that was pretty good, until the kangaroos must have thought they were trapped by us, and hurled themselves quite violently at the cyclone fence trying to escape us, and not realising that the fence was a barrier.  They did this a number of times, to our distress.  We moved further away to try and calm them down/stop them throwing themselves at the fence, and they must have eventually felt secure enough to bound back down the path, and then out the gate to safety away from us.

Once inside the tasting room, the lady there (I don't know her name) was rather generous with her serving tastings.  As we didn't want to be freeloaders we both bought a mixed dozen each.

On the way back to Inglewood we were talking about ruins in the bush, so I took a slight detour (I was the driver) and showed them some old gold diggings, rusted out tanks, etc which Michael had shown me last year

Had a nice wander around

Back home around 5pm, and pottered around a bit.  Justin made up a fire, and I made up a tray of nibbles.  Lana and Peter had a cold weather siesta.

Went to the pub around 7.45, as we'd been worded up that there was a group of 20 going.  I thought it better to go later, after they had presumably ordered and been served.  Jan, Geoff, and Karen G were part of the large group.

Well, best laid plans, as it still took around 3/4 hour to get our dinner from the time of ordering. Had a pleasant evening there, and then back to the house.  Justin stoked up the fire in the dining room, and we continued our conversations late into the night.

Slow start to the morning. I got up and lit the Lux in the kitchen, to boil the kettle, as I was using the bread maker to make some pizza dough. Remember we can't use too more than one heating electric heating appliance at once! I kept the fire box door open to have more heat in the kitchen, but it made the actual boiling of the kettle quite slow

Terry also dropped in later in the morning to apprise us of some news.

After a modest breakfast, Lana and Peter had a wander around the shops, while Justin organised the pizza oven fire and I made 4 x  pizzas.  - as we had decided to have pizza for an early lunch/late brunch,  Once again it was an overcast day, and quite windy also, so we ate in the dining room.  I was surprised that we managed to finish them all off.  Thought there would be some leftovers.

Lana and Peter left soon after lunch, and I pottered around in the garden for a little while, planting some bulbs that I had overlooked from last week, and also pleased to see that a few almond buds had opened.  There should be a lot more for the Christmas in July in August dinner next week.

Meanwhile Justin had been to the IGA, as he'd been eyeing off a fancy electric saw that he hopes to make scullery/kitchen cupboards etc with.  But of course before he can do this, we need to get a garden shed to put the scullery tools in.  He was looking at some on the internet, and seemed quite positive about  a metal one, until he saw some wooden ones for 3 times the price . Unfortunately we disagree on this point.  He wants a "nice" wooden shed.  I think a metal one is fine, and also won't require any upkeep like a wooden one would.  No decision has been reached thus far...Watch this space.
