Karen & Mark 18 - 24 Sep 2016

As I said in the Music night entry, Karen and (later) Mark came up for the week with their Choc lab Moby.

Mark made himself very useful tidying up the garden and fixing the broken table

Music Night 17 & 18 September 2016

Well, it was Music night weekend again, back in the Church as it's still a bit cold in September.

Justin and I came up on Friday night, as I was going to help Terry with some cooking in the morning.

Found a visitor in the kitchen which I moved on into the garden (didn't think Jo or later Karen would appreciate it

Also, given all the rain, we had a look in the cellar, and yes, it was flooded, not too bad, maybe 10cm or so.  Up through the soaked ground

Saturday morning was lovely and sunny and blue, so we had breakfast out in the garden

Went up to Terry's around 9am - as did Arlene, June, Chrissie and Dermott.  On entering the house I could smell the most marvellous bolognaise sauce cooking away on the stove, waiting to be assembled into a lasagne.  It must have been simmering away for some hours.

We made a lamb, barley and vegie soup, lasagne (Terry had of course made the  pasta sheets) and some fruit sponges. June and I were not keen on making the sponges as we didn't consider ourselves experts in that field.  I did end up making them with Arlene (under instruction), and they weren't bad.

Terry also gave us a sample of the salami that he'd made a few weeks before our salami making session.  It was very good and tasty, just a bit on the salty side (but not anywhere near as salty as my proscuitto).  I was very impressed, and was given a bit to take home for Justin to sample also.  Given that we had more guests coming, I left after we'd made the food - and had a quick lunch at home.

Started some weeding - the other side of the front fence, as I wanted it to look nice.   The frogs were providing a gloriously noisy chorus again, and I also dug up one.  Luckily didn't hurt it.

Alex and Sarah had stopped for lunch in Kyneton and arrived around 2pm.  Sarah helped me with the weeding also. Told her she didn't need to.  And we just about finished it. (hoorah)

Alex and I were wondering if Justin would notice what we had done ie moved the rugs, changed the the light fittings around.  He noticed that I'd moved that glass cabinet, as it wasn't in the dining room, but he didn't notice anything else for ages. (a bit unfair, I didn't turn the overhead light on in our room last night, just had the bed side lights on). I've also misplaced the stupid key for that cabinet, so it's locked closed without the glass shelves in it.  I remember the woman giving me the key when we bought it, and I put it somewhere nice and safe ie handbag, purse etc.  But given that this was some months ago, I just can't find it now.  Must have put it somewhere else safe for "safe keeping"  I subsequently asked Karen to ask Denise if she had any spare little keys that we might borrow to open the cabinet.  No such luck yet...We'll also check some of ours out.

Now, to change the subject, Justin had to bail out the cellar - luckily we have lots of gum boots.  I also texted Gordon the roof man to see if he can come back soon, as our other Gordon advised that there was going to be a 100ml downpour on Tuesday or Wednesday (there wasn't!)  and we would have had more substantial leaks through the roof, as the gutter box would fill too quickly

Justin also had lots of of time to practice his music before the music night

Chris, Jo & Yvonne arrived around 4.30, and brought some well appreciated supplies.  Champagne and cheeses etc which we  enjoyed under the tree.

Off to the Church around 6.30, so that we could help set up.  Surprisingly not that cold in the Church.  Had rugged up in preparation but didn't really need it.

And then the bands came on - first the Kingower Rangers, and Graeme from Passing Clouds also came up and did a bit of spoken word

Justin and the city slickers (my name for them) came out around 8.30 for the first set, and then another one around 11.30pm

Another success.  I also called out for them to play Old Paint (by Linda Ronstadt), as Justin had been practicing that one and I liked it.  Chrissie and Maile also took up the call, so they had to sing it. Went down well.

Breakfast the next morning - bacon, eggs, spinach, mushrooms etc - which Jo had kindly supplied.  Inside, as it had rained overnight, and was a bit dreary and damp still.  Made a morning fire for cosiness,  Justin and Chris cooked up the bacon outside

Given that it was wet, it wasn't really gardening /weeding weather, so we sat inside reading the "papers" on the tablets.

Started to get a bit stir crazy, so took Jo, Sarah and Alex for a walk.  Went to where the rusted machinery is, and the dam where Karen and I had once tried to catch yabbies (unsuccessfully).  Last time I was there it was completely dry.  Now it was flooded

dam- hopefully full of yabbies

So, went for a nice walk, my favourite circuit, past the dam and "ruins", into the scrub/bush - along a track of course, onto the white gravel road, past the old chook sheds, and then back to the house.

Had been back about 5 minutes when Karen arrived with her new excitable dog - Moby.  Her & Mark (and Moby) stayed a week as their floorboards were being polished back home.

Mum and me and 5 visitors 10 & 11 September 2016

Well, it was just Mum and me this weekend.  We were supposed to have our very politically incorrect "fur party" or really fur dinner party, however first Maile & David couldn't come, and then Bob and Jo likewise couldn't come, and then Justin had to come back early on the Sunday for band practice, so we ended up postponing it (not cancelling, although I haven't organised a new date as yet, might have to wait til next Winter, we'll see)

Anyway, Mum got to my place just after 8am, and we stopped at the Calder roadhouse for breakfast, a cheeky McDonalds breakfast pack - which was rather good.

On the drive,  Mum couldn't believe how green it all was, as she hadn't been to Inglewood since Autumn, when it was still very brown and dry.

Bridgewater was having their monthly market, so we stopped and had a look.  I bought a number of plants (feeling optimistic with all of this rain), and also met Sally the honey lady, - with the "best garden in Inglewood".  We also saw Coleen in the new Op Shop, and I invited her to drop in on us - as she was saying how lovely the garden looked

And she was right, in front of the house the euphorbias were in bright green "bloom", the calendulas, gazanias grape hyacinths, freesias and unknown white flowers, and inside the garden these plus unknown orange flowers - it all looked very cottagey and lovely

Even had a few roses

And the plum tree by the well in the back was covered in blossom

Anyway, first up, I got a call from Clancy our neighbor in Melbourne, except he wasn't, in Melbourne that is.  He was up the road in Wedderburn, (had been travelling back from a family funeral in Mildura) so he dropped in on us.

Next up was Coleen who I showed around the house, then David and Maile on their way to a Christmas in July in September...(which was why they couldn't come to the Fur party- as they'd double booked)

Maile was looking very festive as per the photo below

Gordon also dropped by, and then Val from across the road also had a bit of a chat.

We possibly had so many visitors because I was busy pulling weeds out the front.  Yes the garden looked very nice, but on closer inspection there were a lot of weeds contributing to the greenery.

I pulled up many wheel barrows full, and just about filled Gordon's trailer.

Given that we had a late breakfast, we also had a late lunch - a warming soup and toast, and then a late dinner at the pub.  My brilliant idea had been to get there around 7.45 or so - as the kitchen closes at 8pm, and be the last order and therefore be served quickly.  Unfortunately it didn't quite work out that way.  We arrived and there were a couple of tables that still hadn't eaten including 2 large tables....

That said we waited about 1/2 hour, which isn't too bad.  I bucked tradition, and had a seafood platter, and Mum had the garlic prawns and rice.

Went back home and had our 2nd game of scrabble (we'd had one after lunch, and I'd beaten Mum by about 100 points).  Unfortunately for her I thrashed her again by about 100, but they were good games and we enjoyed them (when I say good games, we didn't get stuck not being able to go anywhere, and we had some good words)

Mum likes to go to bed around 10, so I went to bed then too, and watched a dvd of Monarch of the Glen which I'd recorded years ago.  I think Justin will model himself on Hector in years to come, and they are also doing up their house - however obviously on a much grander scale.

Sunday morning, and Mum had a surprising but well welcomed sleep in,  I just read the Age in bed on the tablet.  Had a good breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast, and then back out to the garden for more weeding...

Also discovered some poppy plants that had come up out the front in 4 different places (I'd sown some seeds a while back).  Had to weed around the poppies, as I didn't want any zealous helpers pulling up the poppies by mistake as they look a bit like big weeds(don't want to name names ....MM a few years ago)

Given all the rain, the ground was nice and soft, just perfect for pulling the weeds out, however my hands and nails were filthy, and were very difficult to get fully clean.

Gordon had also been around with the weed killer and sprayed around the perimeters - along the fence line around the tree edges etc

poisoned weeds/grass #1

poisoned weeds/grass #2
I'm still iffy about the whole poisoning business - as I'm a weeder, not a sprayer, and given that it killed the grass in the photos above, I'm also assuming that it would kill some of my plants also if sprayed indiscriminately.

I should mention that the electricians had also been back, and replaced the cords, no more knots! However they hadn't put the two way switch in the upstairs hallway - didn't have a wooden mounting board.

The back door is still very stiff  to open, and the front door now seems to stick a bit (unlike a few weeks ago when it didn't latch properly.

And the roof is leaking again...In the same spot - the gully above the stairs, as there was water in the downstairs back hallway.  Looked in the cellar too, but there didn't appear to be any seepage from the ground (salamis looking good though) Spoke to Gordon the roofer, and he thought that the water was gathering in the gully if the rain was bucketing down, and didn't have a chance to disperse.  Said he could build up the gully higher.  We thought it a good idea - and will organise it accordingly
