Ben's Progress Nov 2017

Our dynamo - Ben has been progressing in leaps and bounds.

They did a bit more remedial work in the kitchen - lifted up the hearthstone

He also wanted to chase in the electric work on the large wall, but I told him not to bother at this point in time - until we work out what we want to do with the kitchen

And he showed us this 1st proof of a linocut which someone has done of our house.  More colours will be added later

The top veranda is just about done, and he and his work mates started work on the new back deck veranda.

Ben had sourced some old Tasmanian Oak (originally from a house in Camberwell) from a recycle yard in Castlemaine (same as the top veranda)

The back area had been quite pedestrian, and a bit crowded with "junk" - Ilve oven that we didn't want anymore, Justin's wood for the scullery cupboards, fire wood etc.

Now it's going to be a marvellous new entertaining area.

Here are photos which Ben has texted to me re their progress on the back deck

We think that the workmanship is first rate

He also fixed up that precarious lintel over the kitchen window - using proper lime mortar of course

And, Justin and I had finally decided/agreed on what type of shower screen we wanted for our soon to be real upstairs bathroom.

Given the space available, we had decided on a 900mm x 1200mm dimension, and thought we'd like a frameless screen but then finding one with a matching base on the internet was easier said than done.  We also wanted to see what they looked like in reality, rather than just photos.  They all said top quality fittings, nano non streaking glass etc.  I just wanted to be able to jump in the ute and go and pick one up, but no one seemed to actually have any in stock

Given that I had Friday's off - my neighbour George and I went to have a look at Reece Plumbing in Burwood, but weren't that impressed with the offerings - so left empty handed.

Justin was able to come back "early" from Warrnambool on Fri 24 - so I persuaded him to come and look at a shower screen at a shop in Ferntree Gully.  I'd spoken to the bloke, and he had them in stock.

Drove there - felt like it took a long time - bit of traffic.  Was underwhelmed when we got there - the so called "semi frameless" shower screen was actually framed in our opinion, and the fittings were a bit lightweight and shoddy.  Justin wondered if they might be plastic. It was reasonably cheap also.

That said, we had noticed another bathroom supply shop about 100m away on the way there.  So went and had a look.  This shop had far superior products - with priced to match, and we ended up making a quick decision (it was getting close to closing time at 5pm)  Bought the screen and the base - and we were very happy.  They also had a nice period looking toilet, but it was priced at over $2000, which we thought was way too much for a mere toilet.  Gave that one a miss.  Back to the shower screen, I was just relieved that we'd finally organised it - as Ben was keen to get his plumber Gary to come and fit it out.

Unfortunately, they didn't have either the screen or the base in stock - so I planned to come back with the ute on Friday, and then take them to Inglewood.

Justin and I also went to Bunnings on Saturday, and bought an S trap toilet - something modest, and with a shape that we liked, plain white rectangular tiles, toilet roll holder and soap holder.  We were set, we now had all of our bathroom supplies.

That said, Ben wanted the base and toilet sooner than the Friday - he's a hard task master, and said he'd actually come and pick up the stuff on Tuesday night ......as he was coming into Richmond to have dinner with his Dad.

So he dropped over around 9.30 on Tuesday night (28 Nov) and picked up the shower base (which I'd got earlier in the day), the toilet, tiles, and tapware that Justin had bought from Reece in Warrnambool

And here's Ben's progress with the bathroom
